Yes, stereotypically, people who do yoga are slim. But that doesn't mean you have to be, and yoga can be beneficial for every body of every size. All bodies are beautiful and bodies that are loved as who they are are happier and healthier, so let's make yoga open for all, no matter what size. None of this "yoga for weight loss" or "yoga for a toned butt" - how about yoga for who you are, right now, today.
I admit it, I really like the feel of Lululemon's clothes, and I own some. But they don't make clothes for bigger people, and I think that sucks. Same with Sweaty Betty. So here are some recommendations of brands who make accessible sizes.
Nike has a plus sized range up to 30-32 - these leggings are made from sustainable materials, which makes them extra cool. Props to Nike for using beautiful plus sized models too.
Simply Be do sizes up to 32 - I love these marbled leggings.
Italian brand Maria Rinaldi also do a gymwear section; not cheap but they have interesting styles!
RubyFury does some really cool activewear - these dragonfly leggings for example - love. Up to a 24.
And I have to mention Bravissimo, where I shop a lot - I wear this sports bra in blue which I think is pretty and is also super comfortable. Up to a J cup.
So go wear with pride, and enjoy yoga for who you are today.
I also want to give a shout out to some amazing people who have taught me about body acceptance in yoga.
Firstly to Amber Kearnes of Body Positive Yoga - she writes wonderfully and seems like a lovely person.
Jessamyn Stanley is a yoga teacher and writer, she's on Instagram and writes for the New York Times too.
